Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system — and many Grand Strand homes are running on panels designed for a 1980s electrical life, not today's EV chargers, tankless water heaters, and smart homes. Here are the five clearest signs it's time to upgrade.
1. Breakers Trip Regularly
Occasional trips are the system working correctly. But if the same breaker trips weekly — especially when the AC, microwave, or dryer starts — your circuits are overloaded or the breaker itself is failing. Chronic tripping is a warning, not an annoyance.
2. The Panel Is Warm, Buzzing, or Smells
A healthy panel is silent and room-temperature. Warmth on the panel cover, buzzing or crackling sounds, or any burnt odor means loose connections or failing breakers arcing inside. This is a same-week service call — arcing is how panel fires start.
3. You Still Have 100A Service (or Less)
Modern homes routinely need 200 amps. If you're adding any of the following to a 100A home, an upgrade is usually step one:
- EV charger (a Level 2 charger alone can pull 40–60A)
- Standby generator with whole-house transfer switch
- Heat pump or electric tankless water heater
- Pool, spa, workshop, or major addition
4. Your Panel Is on the Known-Problem List
Certain panel brands from the 1960s–90s — notably Federal Pacific (FPE Stab-Lok) and Zinsco — have documented failure-to-trip defects and are flagged by home inspectors and insurers. Some insurance carriers in South Carolina now refuse or surcharge policies on homes with these panels. If you have one, replacement is a safety issue, not a preference.
5. Corrosion — the Coastal Special
Salt air infiltrates panels near the beach, corroding bus bars and breaker contacts. If you see rust or white oxidation inside your panel (or your panel is outdoors and 15+ years old), have it evaluated. Corroded connections create resistance, heat, and eventually failure — often discovered only when a generator or new circuit is added.
