What Your Generator Does On Its Own
Modern standby units run a weekly or biweekly self-test: 1–10 minutes of unloaded running to circulate oil and verify start capability. Important: the self-test does NOT verify the unit can carry your house under load, and it won't catch a weak battery that starts fine in warm weather but fails on a cold morning.
The Annual Service (Non-Negotiable)
Once a year — ideally in spring, before hurricane season — your generator needs:
- Oil and oil filter change (air-cooled engines are hard on oil)
- Air filter and spark plug replacement per the service interval
